minor setback for the Dallas Aggies

We got sort of crushed last night by Rule 76. The good news is that they are an intermediate team and so the loss doesn't count. We definitely missed David, our awesomely fast soccer player who broke his wrist last Friday. But it was a beautiful night, cool and low humidity - we didn't even need the bug spray we'd brought after last week's mosquito-fest.

In a couple hours Matt and I are heading to the country for Uncle Mike and Eve's wedding weekend extravaganza. It should be lots of fun. We get to see all sorts of family, including Leslie and Bryan!!, play on the lake, have bonfires and good food, and see Eve make Mike the luckiest guy on the planet. We'll get back on Sunday and see how "Uncle" Luke did with the animals - he's staying at our house this weekend while we're at the ranch. Hopefully his nieces behave for him.

We had a bit of a scare with Carolyn this week. She caught some sort of crazy stomach bug that made her so sick she had to get Dad to take her to the hospital early Tuesday morning. We were worried it was something much more serious but her test results all came back fine; she was just super dehydrated so she stayed at Presbyterian Hospital until yesterday getting fluids and having the doctors make sure she was good to go. Luckily she got out yesterday in time for her hair appointment and she will be able to join us for the wedding festivities this weekend. We're so thankful that it wasn't something major and that she seems fully recovered.

Okay, well, I have some last minute packing to do before Matt gets back from work, so...have a happy weekend, everyone!

Double Header Madness

We had a double header last night in flag football and won both! We beat the Speed Freaks 31-20 (those 31 points were unanswered) and Shiner Time 33-19. One of the best things about last night was that Mom, Dad, Susie, and Luke all came to cheer us on. And another great thing - Susie brought her nice digital camera and got some great pictures of us playing. Here's a team photo we took between games:

(L-R) Robert, Emily, Misty, Cameron, Andrea, David, Missy, Blake, LiLi, Kayse, Matt, Ashley, Nick, Duncan, Francis & son

I didn't have a particularly great game, but Matt did awesome enough for the both of us. Things were looking kind of grim at the start of our first game, but we were just getting warmed up. After going down 20-0, we scored 31 unanswered points to take the Speed Freaks down. Then we had a quick break (really, not long at all) before heading to the other field to take on Shiner Time (formerly Miller Time, the team who gave us our one win the first game of last season). They kept it pretty even for most of the game but we took it away in the end. One of our new players, David, is insanely fast (he plays soccer) and had some amazing runs last night. And Misty continued her dominance of the females...to think she wasn't going to play offense because she's nice and will do whatever...she had a ton of catches and probably multiple scores (sorry, I don't keep track that well...maybe I should start using the clipboard I have to ask people to track our moves).

It's a good thing we came away from our double header with confidence, because next week we play one of the three "intermediate" teams (as opposed to "rec") - last season they beat us 41-19. But if we just stick to what works and have enough subs again to keep people fresh, I think we can win.

awesome!

I just scored some majorly good tickets for the NIN concert. They had a presale for registered nin.com members, which was really nice - there was a 2-ticket limit per person and you have to pick up the tickets with a matching ID, so basically it's a system designed to limit scalpers and brokers. As a result of my punctuality, I got us these seats: Section 106, Row B, Seats (1, 2) (map here). Yay!

Here's some other awesome news. Blake just told us that we have a new player on our flag football team: Mark Dodge, who just graduated from A&M and was a starting linebacker on the football team! Here are some highlights from his bio:
  • Position: LB. Height: 6'2". Weight: 220.
  • Served four years in the U.S. Army before returning to college to fulfill his dream of playing college football.
  • Was at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed.
  • Two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week in his first season with the Aggies.
  • Earned his first POW award after making 17 tackles and grabbing an interception against Nebraska on Veteran’s Day.
  • Earned his second POW after posting a crucial fourth-down stop and a fourth quarter interception in the Aggies’ 12-7 victory over Texas.
  • Honorable mention All-Big 12 by the AP.
Wow! One of our teammates has predicted that our players' game attendance might improve with this news.

nin

Anyone else planning on going to see Nine Inch Nails on their next tour? They're hitting American Airlines Center on August 18 :)

And they are giving away their new album for free as a digital download right now. I love Trent Reznor!

Oh yeah - GO STARS! I'm glad Matt and I didn't try to stay up and watch the game to its conclusion (the game went into 4OT and ended at 1:24am).

Game recap

Last night was crazy. We were all pumped up about having our first football game of the season after so many rainouts, and I guess the other team was too. We were playing the Designated Drinkers, a team whose only two wins last season were against us (including a 37-13 blowout). I don't know if this fact meant they were super confident about the game, or they felt like they really couldn't lose to us, or what. Their team is made up of a very bizarre mix of very nice people that are fun to play with and some real jerks. That includes this kid Brant who played for us in a few games last season, who left us with a really bad taste in our mouths after he wanted every pass to be a long bomb in the endzone and who whined about every pass that wasn't to him with an unholy amount of passion. The other major player of the jerk-squad is their quarterback, a want-to-be urban playa' with ear gauges and a backwards flat-rimmed baseball cap. They basically say mean things the whole game, not just smack-talk in innocent fun, but hurtful things that should get them ejected from a rec league. Oh, and QB-gangsta-punk brought his trashy girlfriend along for the game as well, who matched the whines and crap of her team admirably and tried to "throw down" with one of our teammates after the game.

Captain Blake wrote a great summary of the game, so great that rather than trying to write it all in my words I thought I might as well just copy and paste it here. So, the following in italics is Blake's game recap.

Instant Espn classic right there. Another opening day victory for the Dallas Aggies. I did a recap after the first few games of last season but we when we started to lose by more than a few touchdowns every game after that....lets just say I ran out of material. Haha. I'll try to summarize in the best possible way the ridiculousness of a game that was last night.

The game started out well as we were tied for most of the first half. The Drinkers then added a score right before the half ended to put them up 14-7. We all remember their ONLY two touchdowns in that half, right? We came out blazing as soon as the second half started. We went up 20-14 after some great catch and runs for touchdowns. We all remember that we actually had a lead on them, right? Apparently they didn't. The game took a turn for the worse as they went up 28-20 after a long pass and an interception return for a touchdown with only a little over a minute left to go in the game. I would say we were used to this situation of being in it late and having a chance to tie or win but I would be full of it. We get the ball back with about 1:15 left in the game, drive down the field with ease, and score a touchdown. We had no choice but to go for two and that's where Duncan came up with a great grab in the back of the endzone. There was a long pause in play when the Drinkers couldn't understand that we had actually kept up with them. If they hadn't been too busy running their mouths, they might have taken notice of how many times they had actually scored. The officials got the score right and we resumed the last 40 seconds of the game. This is where my favorite moment of the game happened. The quarterback of the other team, the Justin Timberlake wannabe, was running back to the huddle after a big gain saying 'Y'all aren't good enough to beat us." I might have been the only one that caught this. Shortly after, we intercepted a pass from our own DAMC president on a girl play and ran it back for a touchdown to win the game. Game Over.

Final Score: Dallas Aggies 34 Designated Drinkers 28

Game ball goes to...Cameron with a great catch for the first touchdown of her DAMC flag football career. Close second goes to husband Matt as I was very impressed with the smack talk. Matt also had some damn fine catches.

Back to me again. We had two of our new girls - Emily and Andrea - playing with us last night and they were really impressive. They didn't make every catch thrown their way, but they did make a lot of them, which is more than I can say for plenty of my performances. And they had great attitudes and played good D as well. We girls had to step it up without "Golden Hands" Misty at the game, and I think we did it admirably. My touchdown was the culmination of three catches by girls in a row. It's nice to know that our QB doesn't have to rely on the guys to carry the whole game! Oh, and I caught an extra point too, although sadly not the second one that was actually the play following my touchdown...I just didn't think I'd get throw to twice in a row! Matt played awesome and accounted for a lot of our yards and I was really proud of him. It was great to have Duncan back playing with us (he didn't actually end up missing any games because of our rainouts, but he'd been recovering from tax season as well and hadn't made it to anything before last night).

Brant and their QB almost got kicked off the field and out of the league last night thanks to his attitude. It would've been awesome to see. As it was, I think their team got a big black mark next to their name from the Big D Sports representative who was watching our game. They will have to be on their BEST behavior for a while to avoid repercussions from last night. One of the conditions for making the playoffs, incidentally, is a history of good sportsmanship. I just didn't get how they perpetuated a 10-minute-long debate with the refs about the score...two refs and the league representative said we were tied. And boy were they not happy about it. But it sure felt nice when we finally got around to wrapping up the game and Blake made that interception to give us the W.

WINNERS!

We won 34-28! Woot! Details tomorrow, but I scored a touchdown and an extra point and Matt scored at least a touchdown (and a billion yards).

Netflix, weddings, etc

If anyone wants a free trial of Netflix, I got some of the choice one month free trial offers (as opposed to the usual 2 weeks). Just let me know.

I can't believe it is May! I feel like I've entered the wedding month - we have Uncle Mike and Eve's wedding on May 17 and Emily and Rick's on May 25! Add onto that the whole weekends of activities for both, plus a shower for Emily on the 10th, and ... that's a lot of wedding-related excitement! Should be fun. :)

We have (fingers crossed) our first flag football game tonight. Hopefully we have enough people show up and we beat the pants off the Designated Drinkers team!
