Game recap

Last night was crazy. We were all pumped up about having our first football game of the season after so many rainouts, and I guess the other team was too. We were playing the Designated Drinkers, a team whose only two wins last season were against us (including a 37-13 blowout). I don't know if this fact meant they were super confident about the game, or they felt like they really couldn't lose to us, or what. Their team is made up of a very bizarre mix of very nice people that are fun to play with and some real jerks. That includes this kid Brant who played for us in a few games last season, who left us with a really bad taste in our mouths after he wanted every pass to be a long bomb in the endzone and who whined about every pass that wasn't to him with an unholy amount of passion. The other major player of the jerk-squad is their quarterback, a want-to-be urban playa' with ear gauges and a backwards flat-rimmed baseball cap. They basically say mean things the whole game, not just smack-talk in innocent fun, but hurtful things that should get them ejected from a rec league. Oh, and QB-gangsta-punk brought his trashy girlfriend along for the game as well, who matched the whines and crap of her team admirably and tried to "throw down" with one of our teammates after the game.

Captain Blake wrote a great summary of the game, so great that rather than trying to write it all in my words I thought I might as well just copy and paste it here. So, the following in italics is Blake's game recap.

Instant Espn classic right there. Another opening day victory for the Dallas Aggies. I did a recap after the first few games of last season but we when we started to lose by more than a few touchdowns every game after that....lets just say I ran out of material. Haha. I'll try to summarize in the best possible way the ridiculousness of a game that was last night.

The game started out well as we were tied for most of the first half. The Drinkers then added a score right before the half ended to put them up 14-7. We all remember their ONLY two touchdowns in that half, right? We came out blazing as soon as the second half started. We went up 20-14 after some great catch and runs for touchdowns. We all remember that we actually had a lead on them, right? Apparently they didn't. The game took a turn for the worse as they went up 28-20 after a long pass and an interception return for a touchdown with only a little over a minute left to go in the game. I would say we were used to this situation of being in it late and having a chance to tie or win but I would be full of it. We get the ball back with about 1:15 left in the game, drive down the field with ease, and score a touchdown. We had no choice but to go for two and that's where Duncan came up with a great grab in the back of the endzone. There was a long pause in play when the Drinkers couldn't understand that we had actually kept up with them. If they hadn't been too busy running their mouths, they might have taken notice of how many times they had actually scored. The officials got the score right and we resumed the last 40 seconds of the game. This is where my favorite moment of the game happened. The quarterback of the other team, the Justin Timberlake wannabe, was running back to the huddle after a big gain saying 'Y'all aren't good enough to beat us." I might have been the only one that caught this. Shortly after, we intercepted a pass from our own DAMC president on a girl play and ran it back for a touchdown to win the game. Game Over.

Final Score: Dallas Aggies 34 Designated Drinkers 28

Game ball goes to...Cameron with a great catch for the first touchdown of her DAMC flag football career. Close second goes to husband Matt as I was very impressed with the smack talk. Matt also had some damn fine catches.

Back to me again. We had two of our new girls - Emily and Andrea - playing with us last night and they were really impressive. They didn't make every catch thrown their way, but they did make a lot of them, which is more than I can say for plenty of my performances. And they had great attitudes and played good D as well. We girls had to step it up without "Golden Hands" Misty at the game, and I think we did it admirably. My touchdown was the culmination of three catches by girls in a row. It's nice to know that our QB doesn't have to rely on the guys to carry the whole game! Oh, and I caught an extra point too, although sadly not the second one that was actually the play following my touchdown...I just didn't think I'd get throw to twice in a row! Matt played awesome and accounted for a lot of our yards and I was really proud of him. It was great to have Duncan back playing with us (he didn't actually end up missing any games because of our rainouts, but he'd been recovering from tax season as well and hadn't made it to anything before last night).

Brant and their QB almost got kicked off the field and out of the league last night thanks to his attitude. It would've been awesome to see. As it was, I think their team got a big black mark next to their name from the Big D Sports representative who was watching our game. They will have to be on their BEST behavior for a while to avoid repercussions from last night. One of the conditions for making the playoffs, incidentally, is a history of good sportsmanship. I just didn't get how they perpetuated a 10-minute-long debate with the refs about the score...two refs and the league representative said we were tied. And boy were they not happy about it. But it sure felt nice when we finally got around to wrapping up the game and Blake made that interception to give us the W.
